Recently I have been getting very into scuba diving. Within a couple years I have about 30 dives, and completed several certifications.
I find it to be a perfect mix of technical skills, constant learning, and relaxation as you view all the nature hidden underwater. I don't live near a tropical ocean so I am quite limited in where and when I can dive. Most of my dives have been in fresh water with 3ft of visibility however, I have dove a couple quarries with 40ft of visibility, as well as a couple very warm tropical dives on vacation.
Over the next couple years, I plan on continuing my training and learning. I would eventually like to get certified for nitrox, rescue diver, self reliance, and eventually rebreathers. I find the technology facinating and I always want to learn more so this gives an excellent way to do this. The one down side of doing scuba diving as a hobby is that it is very expensive, so while I want to do all the learning, the price limits me on how much I can do any given year.
My eventual goal is to have enough training and skills to be able to volenteer for the local search and rescue dive teams. If I can help people with the specialized skills I have been developing I want to do so. And with Scuba its a very specialized skill set that not a lot of people have. In addition to helping, the certifications ensure I go through the proper channels while learning. I could in theory go scuba dive whenever, wherever, and however I want (There are no scuba police) however it can be extreemly dangerous to do so without the proper training. Additionall every course/class you take helps out the local dive shop and communities, so continuing to support a sport that I enjoy is worth it to me, and spending a bit extra on the classes won't put me in a financial burden.Â
