My biggest hobby outside of Engineering is climbing. I started climbing my freshman year at Iowa State and rapidly climbed through the different grades. By sophomore year I felt confident enough to tryout for the climbing competition team, and I was able to not only get a spot on the team, but specifically get one of the 10 Sponsored positions. With this spot on the team I was able to start going to several competitions with the team and soon earned my first podium (top 3) position. Since then I have competed in countless competitions and have even won a few as well. Competition climbing is not the only type of climbing I enjoy however, when I get the chance to climb outdoors on real rock, I take it.
In 2020 I was elected to be one of the 3 Climbing team captains. In this position, I was responsible for organizing climbing times, coordinating workouts, and determining sponsorship positions. These tasks became very difficult with the introduction of restrictions put in place due to Covid 19 however I was able to find a way around it by partnering with an app called MyClimb. I worked with the founder of the app to setup our local gym and climbing team so we could log climbs and compete in friendly competitions.
In addition to climbing for fun, The climbing community is also generally environmentally conscious. We often help out by cleaning areas that would otherwise be unreachable. I have gone on several "Craig cleanup" days, where we spend most of the day cleaning trash and other debris from the surrounding areas. The day the barrel photo was taken, our group cleaned almost 700 lbs of trash from Tettegouche State Park near Duluth MN that would not have otherwise been accessed by foot.
