First Robotics is so much more than just a robotics competition. Its a program designed to teach kids, no matter what their background is to never give up. This program has taught me so much and the most important thing I have taken out of FIRST Robotics is that I can do anything that I set my mind to.
KING TeC 2169 was the team I was on in high school and it helped shape who I am today. A brief history of the team, is that we started in a barn as a group of friends who wanted to start a robotics team. Slowly we grew as we wanted to share our experience until our programs hosted over 400 students from grades k-12. Every year after our goal was focusing on helping other teams get started around the world.
My Senior year on King Tec was one of the best years the team has ever had. Our robot worked almost flawlessly and qualified us for the world competition!!! In addition we were awarded the Chairmans award for our outstanding outreach that double qualified us for worlds. The video displayed on the left shows our robot in action, and one of the most noticeable features it includes is the sliding gear holder. This design used vision tracking to error correct if our drivers were not perfectly aligned when dropping off the gear. This feature allowed us to outperform most other teams in terms of placing efficiency and lead to us being ranked in the top 100 teams in the world for gear placement.
One of the biggest takeaways from FIRST was the leadership opportunities that were available. During my time in FRC I was given some of the best leadership experience that has helped me numerous times. I started off as the Electronics lead where I was responsible for managing everyone who worked on the electronics of the robot. In my senior year I was elected to be one of the 3 captains of the entire organization. With this role we took a hands off approach for the fabrication of the robot so new members were able to gain the same experience we did. Additionally we had less time for the robot as managing the operation of the umbrella programs took far more time and energy. While we did have help from a few mentors, the majority of decisions were up to the captains for how the entire team was run. We managed everything from the day to day complains from parents and students to the large scale events such as the Mini Mania event where we hosted an off season competition for FRC, FLL, and Junior FLL with over 3000 people. Overall setting aside the headaches when things didn't quite go as planned. This was one of the best experiences of my life and I wouldn't have done anything differently.
